this is such a politically confused film and, as such, probably reflects a lot of the sentiment of its largely working class audience. although the "red" character is dismissed and routinely disparaged, he does not become a true villain until he becomes a capitalist himself. this dualist play of right and left politics is exceptionally culturally interesting.
oh, and, of course, all of this within the context of the worst years of the depression and a lax enforcement period of the hay's code.
