A writer named Algernon (but called Harry by his friends) buys a picture of a boat on a lake, and his obsession with it renders normal life impossible.
I didn’t have high hopes for this given that most student films, even from soon to be greatest of all-time directors, aren’t that great. But it was quite charming! I found it more likable than The Big Shave (despite it lacking the Vietnam angle) as it has a very fast-paced, easy-to-watch style with a likable protagonist. The ending and in turn the story is a little weak. With a better ending that tied everything together, it could have really been something.
The interview with the friend is very cute too.
Marty was so advanced! The technique where the furniture pops up, filling the room presents itself in Fight Club for instance.
You can also Scorsese’s hallmarks already: -Fast-paced editing -Voice-over narration -A picture being prominently featured (Goodfellas, anyone?)
This must have been a lot of work for a student! Putting the stuff in the house one by one, dealing with all the extras, setting up a wedding, taking pictures, making the flower paintings…
Overall, he shows a lot of promise. I bet this guy is going places!
