Yama no oto (1954)

a.k.a Sound of the Mountain

An ingratiating bride develops warm ties to her father-in-law while her cold husband blithely slights her for another woman.

What a heartbreaking drama. Its sheer power left me shaking. And I wasn't the only one: there were a lot of teary eyes leaving the screening. After Meshi and this, Setsuko Hara has quickly become one of my favorite actresses of all time. The performances are excellent all around, Naruse brings an honesty in his actors that is simply brutal and devastating. And the music - ah, the music!

It's been a few hours since I saw it, and I still can't shake this question out of my mind:

I would like to buy this film, not Giant of Thunder Mountain!
