Otherwise known as "The Goonies meet E.T." Only E.T's escaped from Cloverfield and brought all the lens flares from Star Trek with him.
Seriously, someone needs to take the damn lens flare filter off Abrams before he makes a film that's 100% lens flare, rather than just the 60-70% he's limiting himself to at the moment.
The kids were good though and the whole thing will no doubt repeatedly remind you of ET and Goonies. The problem with this is that those two are much loved classics and this doesn't quite stand up next to them, so it's unfortunate you keep getting reminded of them all the way through.
Still, for a good (if a little predictable) film that's a bit too much in love with Spielberg's style, it could have turned out a lot worse (i.e like Indy/Crystal Skull) and, despite all these niggles I'm raising, I enjoyed it.
An original idea that descends into the pit of cliches and same-old. Just take all of the most popular alien movies and mash them together, add a train, and youve got super 8. Cool effects though. It has its moments.
It was good while it was a coming of age film. Good cast and quite engaging.
As an ET-meets-Iron Giant film, though…it was just ok. The last 30 minutes felt incredibly long and I kept wishing they had just stuck with them making a film.
