Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)

A sequel to the 2019 film Joker.

Pete Concrete

In 2019 the Joaquin Phoenix Joker shot into the top 10 of "you're missing the point by idolizing him" characters. The hype was too big for such a simple, blunt film with very obvious plot points. JOKER borrowed heavily from two Scorsese movies, TAXI DRIVER and THE KING OF COMEDY. It felt like a dumbed down remix of both of them, but it had a nice 70s aesthetic and a memorable third act.

Now in 2024, the hype has turned into hate and again, the hate is way overblown. Everyone seems to have adjusted to the internet approach of "it's either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever." The truth is often somewhere in the middle, boring as that might be. I find JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX much more intriguing than JOKER. It has the same aesthetic, but it's less dumb and from an artistic and technical standpoint, the movie is also better. The whole miserabilist drama is thankfully much easier to stomach when the gloom is constantly punctuated by classic show tunes and ballads.

I'm not a huge fan of Todd Philips, but I respect him for having the balls to not give the audience the third act it wanted. Also nobody asks for musicals these days, save for some hardcore movie lovers (like me).

People turned a nihilistic misery piece into a billion dollar blockbuster and now they are mad that the sequel is different, more mature and above all, a musical. Singing and overt displays of emotion, oh no! The irony that people are disappointed in the sequel, much like the angry mob in the film is disappointed in Arthur Fleck for not being who they want him to be, is pretty juicy.

It tries to be a deadpan serious court drama and a silly musical comedy at the same time and fails at both. It's a deconstruction, I get it, but it fails to be interesting enough during its runtime and the message gets across really early. You can just predict how it's gonna end and it keeps draaaaaaagging on with a big pile of mistakes growing as every minute passes by to the point you just give up and start laughing at the sappiness of the jukebox numbers. Camp classic in the making and a slap in the face of all the redpill incels that loved the original. Respect, Todd.
