Spielberg's legendary "bad" movie. It reminds me of a huge, MAD-magazine cartoon. It might have been a better movie if it were shorter and had less characters. But at its 140+ minutes mark (the director's version), cast of thousands, and over-elaborated sets, the movie is almost overwhelming. And it's all craziness all the time. There are no breather scenes, no straight man characters. Everybody acts crazy all the time. Like I said, a bit overwhelming.

And strangely for Spielberg, there is zero sentimentality. Ironically, the closest you get to endearing, sympathetic characters is the Japanese crew in the sub (and, perhaps, the big-wig military commander who only wants to watch "Dumbo").

The movie is written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale, and it really shows. This movie more closely resembles the Back to the Future trilogy than Spielberg's other movies. But Back to the Future had humanity and likable characters to keep us interested in the zaniness and hyper-kinetic action, something this movie lacks.

It is still funny at times, sometimes very funny.
