Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

After arriving in India, Indiana Jones is asked by a desperate village to find a mystical stone. He agrees – and stumbles upon a secret cult plotting a terrible plan in the catacombs of an ancient palace.

Rewatched this recently - better than I remembered. It's the worst of the original Indy movies and Willie can be insufferable, but still better than most action movies since. Indiana's character is perfect, the pacing is solid, it looks and sounds great, and there are some great action scenes (the last 30 minutes stand up to almost any modern blockbuster). The weird dark stuff makes a nice contrast to Last Crusade's more lighthearted feel, while Raiders is the most balanced of the three.

Temple of Doom is a mixed bag. Some of the coolest moments in the Indiana Jones series can be found here, like the raft escape from the plane, the room with the spike trap or the incredible minecart race. Unfortunatly, there are some gripes to be had as well, such as the overall mean-spirited direction the movie takes under the Pankot Palace or the annoying screams and whining from Willy. Instead of focusing on the negatives, one should approach the movie in a positive manner and look at the greatness present: Harrison Ford in his prime and in his most iconic role, the amazing soundtrack by John Williams, the cool special effects, the lush jungle locations and the great stuntwork throughout.

I wish they had taken the annoying woman's heart out instead.
