The Docks of New York (1928)

A blue-collar worker on New York's depressed waterfront finds his life changed after he saves a woman attempting suicide.

Absolutely gorgeous to look at, at times. The way von Sternberg uses mist… The docks are an imaginary realm of desire and violence. The barrel-chested Bancroft is the epitome of fetishized working-class masculinity. Kinda sweetly, stupidly romantic for all that.
