The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones (1987)

Elroy Jetson invents a time machine that takes him back to prehistoric times, where he meets the Flintstone family.

Two major Hanna-Barbera franchises meet in this feature-length film. They both began their broadcasting in the 1960's and to be honest, The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones feels its age. It's an easy move for Hanna-Barbera to just slap together a movie with the Jetsons and the Flintstones and I think that's precisely what happened.

The beginning of the movie starts with the Flintstones and I hate to pull the sexist card out but these opening scenes hint at it pretty heavily. Fred and Wilma have their respective roles in the household, i.e. Wilma makes breakfast while Fred gets to sleep in more and take a shower because he works. There's more, mostly just for the opening though. If this were the 1960's, maybe that would be more acceptable but this was made in 1987. A little late to be doing this sort of thing no? Anyway, they're cavemen so maybe it all makes sense.

For the bits with the Jetsons, it's pretty easy to nitpick elements of their future as not making any sense but whatever. I suppose it's forgivable. One thing I don't remember at all when I was a kid watching the Jetsons is that Mr. Spacely is Mel Blanc sounding exactly like Yosemite Sam! It's kinda strange actually, I mean why would Warner Brothers let Mel do the voice? It's slightly amusing though.

So is the crossover any fun? Not really if you ask me. It just comes off as being really cardboard. I was never really a fan of the Flintstones or the Jetsons to begin with as a kid, I was a Scooby-Doo guy but I was still expecting more. Jokes are extremely hit or miss, mostly miss and the delivery for each one is exactly the same for the respective character. This gets tiresome really quick when it's an unfunny joke told in the exact same way every time.

One good thing though, there's a sort of amusing song that sounds like the 60's meets the 80's which I though was appropriate. Rudy the computer's voice gets really annoying after a while though.

You can guess that both families get sent into the wrong time of course. At first they have a great time and become extremely successful. But then conflicts arise and they want to get the hell out and go back home.

This is an outdated and half-hearted attempt at making a splash back in 1987. More effort could have been put into the lazy ending and the low budget shows when there are some continuity problems with the animation. The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones is a tired, tired affair.
