A work of art, truly. Wonderfully filmed, brilliant ideas and the most realistic portrayal of Hannibal I have ever seen. The sophisticated man depicted in the original Hannibal movies was more of a madman, in this series… you really don't know what he is. And that is exactly the point.

I don't typically like to give TV shows a checkmark on this site but totally making an exception for this one. Currently watching through it for the second time after watching it many years ago and this show is one for the books. It's a character driven show unlike any I have ever seen and everything works in stellar fashion. Mads Mikkelsen is at the absolute pinnacle of his game and disappears into the role of Dr. Lecter with gleeful abandon. Hugh Dancy stands as his match, a kind of superhero with incredible and almost Sherlock Holmes-esque abilities but with weaknesses that perfectly balance the character. The supporting cast is equally spectacular. It's a show that is artfully finished and polished with a feast for the eyes of psychological imagery.

Having finally watched Manhunter and the Anthony Hopkins trilogy, I have to say I actually think this series is the definitive version of Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham. It is ultimately more satisfying, more intriguing and much more nuanced, probably due to the longer length and more room for character development. The world seems more surreal but the characters ring truer to life like they were tailor-made to inhabit this strange alternate universe. Also, even though it was canceled, it has the perfect ending although it left no room for the Clarice Starling character (but I'm not sure they would have ever introduced her to the series anyway since they already had Hannibal's opposite in Graham. Maybe they would have used her but diminished her to a much smaller part.)
I don't want to take anything away from either Manhunter, which I think plays to a lot of Michael Mann's strengths and fits in with other films of his oeuvre that I have seen, or The Silence of the Lambs, which seems like the ultimate film thriller of this sort that had many films aping its style in the years since. Unfortunately, the other two films in the Hopkins trilogy don't add much to the formula and come across as pretenders to Silence's throne.
