A superb film that ushered in the new-wave of British "kitchen sink" dramas in the early 1960s - in fact along with "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" it's probably the best. Laurence Harvey unfortunately struggles with his northern accent throughout but otherwise gives a great, conflicted (Oscar nominated) performance, maintaining our sympathy against the odds, but it's Simone Signoret who really delivers the goods - a great, multi-faceted (Oscar winning) performance. The acting, combined with a great screenplay based on John Braine's novel, Jack Clayton's direction and Freddie Francis' superb B&W cinematography - makes it highly recommended.

beautifully lit with a very natural screenplay. very involving story with many interesting characters this is great and hasn't aged too much either
