Those judging this film as oscar bait are forgetting, or were perhaps not old enough at the time to have realized, how much this film did to bring awareness to AIDS and to take off some of the negative stigma surrounding the disease. I don't think this was a perfect execution or a completely guileless production, but I do believe the effort was genuinely inspired.

The song in the final scene absolutely kills. A rare tear-up for me.

Finally saw it, it's a shame it's taken me so long. Beautiful movie, sad of course, but beautiful and important. Tom Hanks was great and the music is wonderful… one of the first big movies to address topics like homosexuality and Aids and a plea for tolerance and understanding.
